UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The Champions League, begun in 1955,
is Europe's major football championship involving Europe's most successful club teams.

Qualifying teams are placed in a structured draw which results in 8 groups of 4 teams. Group members play each other twice, once at home and once away.
The two most successful teams from each group then move on to the next knockout stage which begins each February leading up to the final in May.

It is a hugely popular championship and, via television coverage, has a worldwide audience of millions.

Real Madrid has been the most successful team in this championship.

Forthcoming UEFA Champions League Finals:

2006 - 2007 Athens     MILAN v LIVERPOOL   23 May 2007
2007 - 2008 Moscow
2008 - 2009 Rome
The trophy has to be handed back each year before the new championship takes place . Miniature replicas are awarded to winners for them to keep unless a team wins 3 times in a row, or 5 times in all, when they are allowed to keep the original trophy.

UEFA CUP

This championship, also for club teams, is Europe's second
most important football event.

There is a complicated qualifying procedure and participants
include those teams eliminated during the UEFA champions League.

Since its inauguration in 1971, teams from Italy, Spain and England
have been most successul, each country having had 10 winning teams.

Finals of this annual championship take place in predetermined stadiums.

Finals are scheduled to be held as follows:

2006 - 2007 Glasgow In Scotland    ESPANYOL v SEVILLA 16 May 2007
2007 - 2008 City of Manchester Stadium, England
2008 - 2009 Istanbul, Turkey

Like the UEFA Champions League, teams which win three times consecutively
or 5 times overall, are allowed to retain the trophy.

Both competitions are organised by UEFA,
the UNION OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATIONS, the governing body for European football and one of the FIFA continental confederations.
