The Football World Cup Championship takes place every 4 years and is open to nations from around the world.
The championship is organised by FIFA ( the International Football Federation, football's governing body) and countries bid to host the event.
The 2006 FIFA Football World Cup took place in Germany from 9 June to 9 July.
With qualifying matches out of the way, the draw for the finals was held in Leipzig on 9 December 2005.

On 8 June 2006, the championship began with a spectacular gala opening at the newly refurbished Berlin Olympic Stadium.
Competitions began on 9 June with the first match of the 2006 World Cup Championship being held in Munich.
The final of the 2006 World Cup Championship between France and Italy was held in Berlin on 9 July.
Semi-final matches, between Germany and Italy, and France versus Portugal, were in Dortmund on 4 July and in Munich on 5 July.
